Good afternoon! Welcome to the Student Media Poll Newsletter for Jan. 4, 2022. Bowl season is almost through, as the College Football Playoff Semifinals concluded on New Year’s Eve, with Alabama and Georgia headed to Indianapolis. In basketball, the men’s No. 1 knocked off another undefeated, while the women’s No. 1 lost its first game of the season.
THIS WEEK’S POLLS:
🏈 There is no new football poll this week. The next football poll will be following the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022.
⛹️♂️🏀 Another quiet week in men’s college basketball sees Baylor keep the top spot in the SMP, now unanimously, after taking down fellow Big XII undefeated Iowa State. No teams entered or dropped out from the poll for the first time in any SMP, regardless of sport.
⛹️♀️🏀 Missouri pulled off the upset of the season last week in Columbia, Missouri, taking down then-undefeated No. 1 South Carolina, 70-69 in OT. SC is still No. 1 in the WBB SMP this week, while Mizzou received 3 votes.

🐘 TIDE ROLL: SMP No. 1 Alabama cruised to a 27-6 Cotton Bowl victory over No. 3 Cincinnati on Friday, securing a spot in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. SMP’s Ashlee Woods had coverage for The Crimson White.
🦴🔴 DAWGS BARK BACK: Following a disappointing showing at the SEC Championship, SMP No. 4 Georgia took down No. 2 Michigan 34-11 in the Orange Bowl. SMP voter and Student SECtion co-host Jack Duffey graded the Bulldogs’ performance for The Red & Black.
🚂 SPOILERMAKER SPECIAL: Purdue and Tennessee played in a chaotic Music City Bowl on Thursday, with the Boilers winning 48-45 in overtime on a controversial 4th down stop. SMP voter Steven Randall wrote about an unforgettable shootout in Nashville for The Purdue Exponent.
